Bill Schmidt is an American abstract painter, born in Trenton, New Jersey.听 He holds a BFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and also studied at the Skowhegan School. 听He received his MFA in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art.听 In 1996 he became a Resident Artist in MICA鈥檚 Post-Baccalaureate Program in Fine Art, a position held until he was appointed the Interim Director in 2001.听 Since 2006 he has been the program鈥檚 Director.
Schmidt鈥檚 work has been exhibited extensively with solo shows in Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia.听 Recent group shows include 鈥淰ariations in Paint鈥 at the Drawing Center, NYC, 鈥淚nterior Space 鈥 Small Scale Abstract Painting鈥 at Long Island University, and 鈥淪quared鈥 at Geoffrey Young Gallery in Great Barrington, MA.听 He has received numerous grants and awards, including an artist residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in 2014.
In addition to his involvement with art, Schmidt is a musician who has played traditional American music for over 40 years.听 He has recorded numerous times and performed in Canada, Europe and the U.S.
