DESCRIPTION:SIN INDIFERENCIA 鈥� MEXICAN ART AND OBJECTS 1956-1973 FROM THE 吃瓜头条 ARCHIVES鈥� COLLECTION: This exhibition of 吃瓜头条鈥檚 Mexican art and objects from 1956-1973 compels us to consider the theme of 鈥渙therness鈥� through the lens of Mexican modernism\, provenance\, ancient aesthetics\, and the power of art to bridge cultural divides. 鈥淪in Indiferncia鈥� or 鈥淲ithout Indifference鈥� is the title of a sculpture in this exhibit by Mexican artist\, Herbert Hofmann-Ysenbourg\, and speaks to how 吃瓜头条 looked past otherness and came to possess and preserve these objects. \nThe exhibition is open from Thursday\, Oct. 2\, through Sunday\, Dec. 7. Gallery hours are Tues鈥揊ri\, noon to 4 p.m.; and Sat鈥揝un\, 1 to 4 p.m. There will be an Opening Reception on Thursday\, Oct. 2\, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Gallery of the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Westside campus. His works are assembled forms of painting\, drawing and sculpture that examine the roles of landscape and nature in contemporary culture. He received a B.F.A. in painting from Rhode Island School of Design in 1985 and also studied in Rome through RISD鈥檚 European Honors Program. He received his M.F.A. in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University in 1993. \nBartel was a 1990 recipient of the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship (U.S. Department of Education\, Washington\, D.C.). In 2000\, he was awarded a Connecticut Council on the Arts Fellowship Grant in support of the continuation of his related drawing series entitled\, 鈥淕arden Studies鈥� and 鈥淭erra Reverentia鈥�. His work has been exhibited at Palo Alto Art Center\, Brockton Art Museum\, and Katonah Museum of Art\, among others. \nA passionate teacher\, Bartel has taught at Brown University\, Carnegie Mellon University\, Manhattanville College\, and Vermont College. He has been a guest critic at Rhode Island School of Design and has lectured at Alfred University\, Chatham College\, and The New England Teaching Conference. Currently\, Bartel teaches drawing\, painting\, sculpture\, installation art\, and conceptual art at the Cambridge School of Weston in Massachusetts. He is the founder of IS (Installation Space)\, a proposal-based installation gallery\, as well as the founder and Gallery Director of the Cambridge School鈥檚 Thompson Gallery\, a teaching gallery dedicated to thematic inquiry.
