HON 498 - Prof. Paul Wegner

Modes of Inquiry: Scientific and Mathematical Analysis, Artistic Creation and Analysis, Textual Analysis, and Historical, Social & Cultural Analysis

Course Description:

This course introduces students to the field of experimental archaeology through its concepts,Ìýtheory, and practical methodology. Students will engage with the archeological record byÌýlearning traditional skills and conducting experiments designed to give them a betterÌýunderstanding of the materials used by people in the past. Readings will primarily focus onÌýpreviously published experiments, where students will be asked to reflect on both the designÌýand results of the experiment. Further readings will be centered around the use of the scientificÌýmethod, material culture studies, and archaeological theory. Through practical methodology,Ìýreadings, and experimentation, students will better understand how experimentalÌýarchaeology can enhance traditional archaeological inquiry. Students will have the opportunity toÌýdesign and implement their own experiments using skills and methods they acquired throughÌýthe course.Ìý
