CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION TIPS

By Sarah Khan, CC

1. Engage to broaden perspectives.聽Every communication, whether it be public or interpersonal,聽is an opportunity for everyone to expand their views.

2. Consider that your reality comprises all your perspectives, emotions and motivations.聽 Your reality forms your truth, and your truth is yours, and yours alone.聽聽

3. Let go of the belief:聽For me to be right, I must prove you wrong. Anyone鈥檚 truth is as self-evident to them as yours is to you.聽聽

4. Win hearts, not arguments.聽Don鈥檛 get into arguments about who is more right.聽When you play the 鈥渞ight vs. right鈥 game, you lose the opportunity to bridge differences.

5. Use the 鈥漼es, and鈥 approach to address disagreements by acknowledging a person鈥檚 opinion first, then stating your own. The more respect you show to others, the more likely they will be receptive to your views.

6. Share your struggles to sell your successes. The only difference between a success story and a crisis story is the ending.

7. Walk your message.聽

It鈥檚 not about what you say, but about who you are.聽Inspiration and influence begins with what you believe.聽聽

8. Remember, it鈥檚 not about you.聽 The most influential and impactful people are those who focus on serving others.聽聽

9. Soften the sharp edge of truth with self-deprecating humor.聽 Laughter makes us listen.
