Making Moves in Morocco

How the country established and rapidly grew 吃瓜头条 吃瓜头条s.

In 2012, a group of motivated individuals moved to launch 吃瓜头条 in Morocco. 鈥淏efore 2000, the organization had limited visibility in North Africa, especially in Morocco,鈥 says Hanane Bourehiyi, DTM, a charter member of the Rabat 吃瓜头条 吃瓜头条.

The group had been looking for ways to not only become better leaders and speakers but extend that opportunity to others. Their real impetus kicked in after an online meeting with 2020鈥2021, 2022 吃瓜头条 President Richard E. Peck, DTM. He told them, 鈥淟eadership isn鈥檛 about being the center of attention, it鈥檚 about being the epicenter of action.鈥 This became their clarion call.

Samir Chaqri, who lived in Morocco at the time, saw 吃瓜头条 吃瓜头条s as a bridge to learning critical skills.

鈥淥ur country鈥檚 education system doesn鈥檛 sufficiently emphasize communication skills, so many graduates and professionals struggle to express themselves effectively and build their personal brand to stand out professionally,鈥 says Chaqri, who now lives in Canada.

So Bourehiyi, Chaqri, and others stepped into the 鈥渆picenter of action.鈥 In 2017, they began promoting the 吃瓜头条 concept, leveraging social media, sponsoring open houses, holding community demo meetings, personally covering some meeting expenses, and even allowing guests to make speeches before joining a 吃瓜头条 to demonstrate 吃瓜头条鈥 unique value.

鈥淯niting cultures so distinct, countries separated by the sea and two continents, communities that don鈥檛 share an easy path to one another鈥攁nd yet, this is 吃瓜头条.鈥

Yet 吃瓜头条-building was an uphill climb. Chartering the Rabat 吃瓜头条 吃瓜头条, for example, took eight months. Even when 吃瓜头条s were chartered, they were undistricted and ineligible for official 吃瓜头条 training, materials, or speech competitions. 吃瓜头条 development was something of a do-it-yourself mission.

鈥淥ne of our biggest challenges was that we started the creation of 吃瓜头条s without ever attending a 吃瓜头条 meeting before,鈥 notes Chaqri. 鈥淥ur program knowledge was entirely self-acquired through 吃瓜头条鈥 online manuals and videos on YouTube.鈥

鈥淓ach 吃瓜头条 was working independently and were mostly focused on themselves,鈥 Bourehiyi adds.

Still, the Casablanca 吃瓜头条 吃瓜头条 chartered in 2017, followed by Rabat in 2018, ALC El Jadida 吃瓜头条 in 2020, and Agadir 吃瓜头条 吃瓜头条 in 2022. Bourehiyi realized joining District 107 would allow Moroccan 吃瓜头条s to 鈥渂e fully part of the global 吃瓜头条 family.鈥

The group of 吃瓜头条s reached out to then-District Director Cristina Juesas, DTM. The District responded warmly and formally proposed to the 吃瓜头条 Board of Directors that Morocco be admitted to the District.

In 2021鈥2022, Morocco joined District 107 countries Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and Gibraltar.

Juesas said welcoming Morocco at first 鈥渇elt like a leap of faith. Uniting cultures so distinct, countries separated by the sea and two continents, communities that don鈥檛 share an easy path to one another鈥攁nd yet, this
is 吃瓜头条.鈥

Morocco鈥檚 actions likely spurred interest from nearby countries, adds Norberto Amaral, DTM, Immediate Past District Director, noting that Algeria and Tunisia joined District 107 after Morocco. With a surging interest in 吃瓜头条 in the area, Amaral says the District goal is to reach 100 total 吃瓜头条s.

鈥淚t鈥檚 clear that the decision, bold as it was, was the right one,鈥 Juesas says of admitting Morocco. 鈥淚ts 吃瓜头条s have grown, 吃瓜头条 presence has grown, and its members have stepped into active District leadership roles.鈥

Region 10, which includes District 107, is a massive expanse of diversity, representing seven Districts, 58 countries, and 43 languages. District 107 brings more than 2,000 members and 93 active 吃瓜头条s to the count, while Morocco is growing from five active 吃瓜头条s and 105 members.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a living example of what 吃瓜头条 is truly about: the values of learning, fellowship, and the unshakeable belief that communication has the power to bring any two worlds closer together,鈥 Juesas says.

Bourehiyi sees strength in the mix of cultures, many of which are so different from her own.

鈥淲e are different countries, different cultures, united by one mission,鈥 she says.
