Overview
The mathematics programs offered by the department areÌýdesigned to meet the needs of students interested in pureÌýor applied mathematics or mathematics education. TheÌýprograms are flexible and kept up to date. They canÌýaccommodate students who plan to continue with graduateÌýstudies in mathematics or related fields as well as thoseÌýwho want to enter the profession directly from college.
Mission
The ³Ô¹ÏÍ·Ìõ Department of Mathematics supports theÌýUniversity’s mission as an accessible, responsive, and creativeÌýintellectual resource for the people and institutionsÌýof Connecticut. We strive to meet the mathematicalÌýneeds of a diversified student body through instruction,Ìýscholarship, and public service. The Department aspiresÌýto provide students with the background in mathematicsÌýand mathematics education necessary to be successful inÌýtheir chosen careers and to be productive members ofÌýsociety.
Mathematics is a core component of education forÌýthe 21st century, forming a basis of modern technologicalÌýsociety. As such, it must be at the forefront of topicsÌýstressed by a public university. Mathematics is a tool forÌýdeveloping a technologically literate citizenry.
Both an art and a science, mathematics remains atÌýthe heart of a liberal arts education. Learning mathematicsÌýenables a person to think logically, solve problems,Ìýand delve beneath the surface of many varied and seeminglyÌýunrelated subjects.
To accomplish this mission, the department:
- Prepares students in mathematics through its majorÌýofferings at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Prepares students with strong skills in mathematicalÌýcommunication, problem-solving, mathematical reasoning,Ìýand connections to related areas.
- Enhances the lifetime preparation of students so theyÌýare mathematically and technologically literate membersÌýof society.
- Provides needed resources for continuing educationÌýand retraining in mathematics for regional citizens currentlyÌýemployed and those who are switching fields.
- Shares its expertise in mathematics, mathematics education,Ìýand statistics with many departments within the university as well as a wide variety of businessesÌýand schools outside the university.
- Conducts basic and applied research in the fields ofÌýmathematics and mathematics education.
- Provides developmental mathematics courses for students entering the university who are not adequately
