Moreira is a proud 2004 graduate of the social work program, and like many others, came to 吃瓜头条 as a transfer student from Naugatuck Valley Community College. In her desire to advance her professional opportunities, in 2021 she earned a doctorate in Social Work from Southern Connecticut State University as part of its first DSW cohort. She is a living example of what I call the 鈥榗ontinuum of quality鈥 of our state colleges and universities and how collaboratively, they produce a strong, viable workforce. Michael Azzi will soon be sworn in as an Air Force Intelligence Officer and receive an M.S. in Homeland Security鈥淢y academic track in Homeland Security at WestConn and my participation in AFROTC tie directly to each other. Both have given me so much insight about my future career in respect to crisis and disaster management, and time and resource efficiency. It鈥檚 been a wonderful cross-training experience. Add to that my leadership experience as SGA President, the flexibility I have been afforded in my work as a Graduate Intern, and WestConn鈥檚 cross-town agreement with Yale AFROTC, and they have all worked together to provide me with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.鈥

Natalia Avendano鈥檚 non-linear path to her Nursing degree makes receiving it even sweeter鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 going to finish my degree, but everyone 鈥 including my husband 鈥 insisted that I absolutely had to finish. Music performance and Legal Studies major Hannah Alexander receives Barnard Award鈥淓ven though other programs also offered me scholarships, there was just something different about WestConn. I felt very secure in my choice to come here, and I would encourage anyone to consider this option. WestConn is the most friendly and welcoming place I looked at, and is so different from typical conservatory settings. Here, there is camaraderie and everyone lifts each other up. None of the other schools I considered could have offered a dual major experience this way, and I could not be more grateful for how the university supported me and made it work in my schedule.鈥

Never one to sit still, Dr. Theodora Pinou has been globe-trotting with the goal to document biodiversity and instill a love of STEM in students鈥淪TEM education is the priority. Because of my work, I鈥檓 considered an expert in applying natural history collections in the classroom. This ties in with my National Science Foundation grant and sea turtle research. A collaboration between Poli Sci Professor Dr. H. Howell Williams and student Chris Powers allows classmates to see 鈥90s politics from both perspectives鈥淚 think my classmates appreciate what we鈥檙e both bringing to the class, and how we present it to them. I feel that political science is like a puzzle and I鈥檝e been able to piece the puzzle together; and now I鈥檓 trying to help my fellow students understand how to do it, too, in order to comprehend what鈥檚 happening right now. It鈥檚 amazing as an undergraduate to have an opportunity to work so closely with a university professor like this. Not only has it been really fun and rewarding, but I鈥檓 not sure I would have had this kind of opportunity anywhere else.鈥
